Education Database: https://www.proquest.com/education
This database, from info-tech publisher ProQuest, provides a directory of dissertations, journals, and other resources on education, including (but not limited to) the field of instructional design. It can be accessed through UNT libraries online system.
A search of “instructional design” located an impressive 151,057 results, composed of 88,862 scholarly journals and 49,054 dissertations and theses, as well as magazines, newspaper articles, and books. Another helpful tool is that searches can be narrowed by publication date, document type, subject, company/organization, location, language, and person. I was delighted to see Confucius (551-479 BC) among the scholars present in this database. Best of all for the Ph.D. student, citations are pre-formatted in APA style.
A typical example is “A scoping review of the application of systematic instructional design and instructional design models by academic librarians” (Johnson-Barlow and Lehnen, 2021). I was impressed by this article’s articulation of two dominant themes in chapter two of Rapid Instructional Design: Learning ID Fast and Right (Piskurich, 2015), namely putting in front end work to save time, money, and effort down the line. I was also impacted by the article’s emphasis on the role of the librarian in the learning environment: “As librarians take a more active role in the curriculum, they spend increasing amounts of time creating unique instructional products to meet the educational demand of individuals and programs academic librarians support” (Johnson-Barlow and Lehnen, 2021). Librarians themselves are driving the expansion of responsibility through genuine interest in the psychology of learning ((Johnson-Barlow and Lehnen, 2021).
